Inflammatory Bowel Diseases represent a complex group of chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, impacting millions of individuals worldwide. Inflammatory bowel disease is a term that refers to Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, two inflammatory conditions.

What are Inflammatory Bowel Diseases?

IBD encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. The two primary types are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. While they share symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss, they differ in the location and nature of inflammation within the digestive tract.

Crohn's disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus, and often involves deeper layers of the bowel wall.

Ulcerative colitis, on the other hand, is limited to the colon and rectum, typically involving only the innermost lining of the bowel.

Microscopic colitis causes intestinal inflammation that’s only detectable with a microscope. A third category, indeterminate colitis inflammatory bowel disease, refers to IBD that has features of both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease usually are characterized by diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss. For some people, IBD is only a mild illness. For others, it's a debilitating condition that can lead to life-threatening complications.

Causes:

  • Genetics: As many as 1 in 4 people with IBD have a family history of the disease.

  • Immune system response: In people with IBD, the immune system mistakes foods as foreign substances. It releases antibodies (proteins) to fight off this threat, causing IBD symptoms.

  • Environmental triggers: People with a family history of IBD may develop the disease after exposure to an environmental trigger. These triggers include smoking, stress, medication use and depression.

Risk factors

  • Age. Most people who develop IBD are diagnosed before they're 30 years old. But some people don't develop the disease until their 50s or 60s.

  • Race or ethnicity. Although IBD is more common in white people, it can occur in any race. Cases are also increasing in other races and ethnicities.

  • Family history. You're at higher risk if you have a close relative — such as a parent, sibling or child — with the disease.

  • Cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking is the most important controllable risk factor for developing Crohn's disease.

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These include ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), naproxen sodium (Aleve), diclofenac sodium and others. These medications may increase the risk of developing IBD or worsen the disease in people who have IBD.

Symptoms of IBD:

Signs and symptoms that are common to both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis include:
